In 1931 Jane Addams was the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

As founder of the Hull House settlement in Chicago, she and her cohorts provided kindergarten and daycare facilities for children of working mothers, employment services, and eventually convinced the Illinois legislature to pass child labor protection laws and compulsory education laws for children.
